田上市長、

私のノーベル文学賞受賞へのお祝いのメッセージありがとうございました。貴台にお手間をとらせて私へお手紙を書いていただいたと思うと大変心打たれましたし、長崎市民の皆様を代表してそうしていただいたと思うと、もっと感動いたしました。

来月私はストックホルムを訪問いたしますが、文学賞受賞の数日前にスウェーデン王立アカデミーで公式にノーベルレクチャー（ノーベル賞受賞者記念講演）を行います。そこでどのように長崎が、そして長崎の記憶が私の執筆の基礎となっているかについて少し詳しく話してみようと思います。貴台がお手紙の中で言われていたとおり、イングランドで育った私にとって記憶の中の「日本」とは、まさしく長崎のことです。長崎以外は知りません！ 「長崎」と聞くだけでいまだに特別な気持ちに包まれます。ですので、もう一度お伝えします。貴台からお手紙をいただきましたことをただただ感謝しております。このような大きな賞をいただくことになったことを長崎市民の皆様にも喜んでいただけましたことを大変うれしく思っております。

Dear Mr Taue,

Thank you so much for your kind letter congratulating me on the Nobel Prize in Literature. I was extremely moved that you should go to the trouble of writing to me, and more so because you are able to speak on behalf of the people of Nagasaki.

When I go to Stockholm next month, and deliver my official Nobel Lecture at the Swedish Academy a few days before I receive the prize, I plan to talk in some detail about how Nagasaki, and my memories of Nagasaki, were the foundations of my writing career. You are correct in what you say: what I always remembered as 'Japan' when I was growing up in England was Nagasaki――I knew no other Japan! I still feel a special emotion just to hear the word 'Nagasaki'. So I can only say, once again, how grateful I was to receive your letter. I am so glad that the people of Nagasaki are able to share in my joy at receiving this huge honour.
