Japan More Dependent on Russia for Crude Despite Tensions
[Dow Jones] Japan's reliance on Russia for crude has risen despite prolonged tensions between the West and Russia. Japan's imports of crude oil from its northern neighbor rose 63% on-year to 338,629 barrels a day in January, government data show, making up 10% of its total crude imports. The sharp rise in volume came after a 12% growth in 2014, or 8.1% of Japan's total crude imports in the year, according to the data. Russia is one of Japan's strategic targets for energy security, because of its geological proximity and the absence of a delivery choke point. Russia is expanding its energy sales for North Asia, including Japan, to diversify its customer base from Europe.
