Japan's Reduced Costs for Fuel Imports Help Boost Yen

[Dow Jones] The yen has been driven higher in recent sessions because of its perceived status as a haven currency. But there are other real-demand factors likely contributing to the yen's gains: reduced costs of fuel imports. Japan restarted the first nuclear reactor in nearly two years in August and more reactors are scheduled to be back online this year. All reactors went offline following the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011. Sharp falls in crude prices are also helping reduce the price tag for fuel imports. Data showed Tuesday that the surplus in the current account, the broadest measure of Japan's trade with the rest of the world, more than doubled from a year earlier to Y1.144 trillion ($9.8 billion) in November, helped by narrowing trade deficits. Japanese energy importers typically sell yen and buy dollars to purchase fuel, but they are needing to do less of it.
