Japan May Cut CO2 Emissions 25% by 2030, METI Says
[Dow Jones] Japan can cut carbon dioxide emissions 25% by 2030, if the country generates 20%-22% of total power output from nuclear and 22%-24% from renewable energy, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry says at an energy-mix panel meeting Tuesday. These numbers are still under discussion, but the panel is expected to close the talks by end-May and an official CO2 reduction target will be announced early June. After the Fukushima accident in March 2011, Japan's CO2 emissions soared because power companies generated electricity using a large amount of natural gas and coal to make up for idled nuclear power.
