Nissan Motor Co. said on Tuesday it planned to spend 6.4 billion yen ($54 million) to boost its production capacity for subcompact engines at its main engine plant near Tokyo by 80,000 units a year by December 2008.
Nissan declined to give a new output capacity figure for the Yokohama plant, which had a production capacity of 400,000 engines a year as of March 2005.
The planned new investment is part of the company's three-stage output expansion programme for the Yokohama plant, a Nissan spokeswoman said. The company aims to spend 15.7 billion yen this business year on the plant, following 11 billion yen that it spent in the year ended March, she said.
Nissan said last month it would reduce production at two car assembly plants in Japan for three months starting in April to adjust inventory levels and prepare for a seasonal downturn in demand.
